How to slow down and enjoy life
In the western world it seems like everyone has their head in a cell phone or they are in some fantasy world. Not many people in western society know what "the moment" is because they are always running from it. Everyone is comfortable in their own lives just thinking about the past or the future. It takes a lot of practice to live in the moment, but here are a couple of things you can do to start living in reality.
1. Don't forget about the present
Slow down and observe everything that is going on around you. Just notice how your mind tries to escape reality and how it is a little uncomfortable to be in reality.
2. Multitasking has no benefits.
Scientists have proven that we can't multitask. If we try to multitask than we greatly hinder the efficiency of the tasks we are completing. It has no benefits. It will just take you twice as long to complete your task. Your productivity rate will go down tremendously.
3. Do one thing at a time
This goes back to the multitasking point. The more distractions and things going on around us, the less efficient we will be. The human mind can only focus on so many things at a time. If we can eliminate distractions than we can improve productivity and enjoy life more.
4. Live a quality life over a quantity life
In the western world we are told that we need to be as productive as possible. We are focused on getting as many things done as possible, but really we just need to slow down and do more quality work than we do quantity work. I am currently focused on making my blog posts have more value to people reading them and not writing as many. I am starting to write posts that will be more valuable to people because I am telling the "How" more than the "Why".
5. Try meditating
Meditating is one of the best ways to experience reality. Meditation has many stereotypes. For example, people think that only monks meditate and they sit in a full lotus position but really meditating is for anyone that wants to try it, and you can sit in a chair. You can even meditate with your eyes open. I am currently starting my meditation journey and it is going great. I would recommend this video to start meditation.(Guided Meditation). You could also try the headspace app.
If we just slow down every once in a while we might be able to see life as it is, not as it was or what it will be. We can notice all the sights, sounds, tastes and smells as they are now, not as we think they are.
